Testers

Try our apps before anyone else, and find the bugs before the dinosaur does.

How it works5 steps

From invite to bug report

Join once, and every new test lands in your inbox. You decide each time whether to take part.

  1. 01

    Join the group

Our testers are one Google Group. Open groups.google.com/g/valvomo-testers and press “Join group”. That's the whole sign-up: no forms, no accounts on our side.

Join with the same Google account your phone's Play Store uses. Google Play checks that account when you install a test version, and it's the most common reason a test link says “App not available”.

  2. 02

    Get the invite

When a new test starts, we post it in the group. Google Groups emails every post to its members by default, so you'll get it in your inbox, usually a few times a year rather than a few times a week.

Each invite tells you what the app is, which platform it runs on, how long the test lasts, what we'd like you to look at, and whether it's paid. Ignore any invite you're not interested in; nothing happens.

  3. 03

    Install the test version

The invite has two links. On an Android phone, the Google Play link lets you join the test and install in one go. The web link shows a “Become a tester” page that works on any device; after that, install from Google Play as usual.

Test versions come through Google Play like any other app and update automatically. When the app launches publicly you simply keep it, and your updates continue.

  4. 04

    Use it, break it

Use the app the way you normally would, a few minutes now and then is plenty. Try the odd things too: very long names, no network, rotating the phone, the button nobody presses.

Found something? Email [email protected] with what you did, what you expected and a screenshot if you can, or use the private feedback box on the app's Google Play page. Praise is fine too.

  5. 05

    Stay to the end

Many tests are the closed test Google Play requires before a new app can launch: at least 12 testers who stay opted in for 14 days in a row. If you leave the group or the test early, the count starts over for us, so please stay until we say it's done.

    Typical closed test: 14 days

What you can earn

Not every test is paid. Early betas and quick checks usually aren't. The closed tests Google requires before a launch usually are, because they ask more of you: 14 days without leaving.

Whatever the deal is, it's in the invite before you join that test, and it doesn't change halfway through. We never ask for passwords, card numbers or money to take part.

Your email, and nothing else

Joining the group shares your Google account's email address with us, the group owner. We use it for one thing: inviting you to tests and adding you to them on Google Play. It isn't sold, shared or used for marketing, and other members can't see the member list.

To leave, open the group and choose “Leave group”; you'll get no more invites. To quit a single test, use “Leave the program” on the test's Google Play web page. What each app does with data is in its own privacy policy, for example Vuoropalkkalaskuri's.

QuestionsFAQ

Good questions

Google Play says “App not available”.

Your phone's Play Store is signed in with a different Google account than the one that joined the group, or you joined a minute ago. Join with the Play Store account (or switch accounts in Play), wait a few minutes and open the link again.

How much time does it take?

Joining takes a couple of minutes. During a test, opening the app a few times a week and using it for real is enough. Google wants to see real use, so please don't just install it and forget it.

Is a test version safe to install?

It's distributed through Google Play and goes through the same checks as any app there. It can still have bugs, which is the point, so don't rely on a test version for anything important until it's out of testing.

Can I leave in the middle of a test?

Yes, any time. For a paid test the reward is for the full period, so leaving early means no reward, and for a closed test it means we have to find a replacement. A heads-up by email is appreciated.

Do you have iPhone tests?

Not yet. Our current apps are Android and web. If an iOS test comes up, the group hears about it first.

Is my feedback public?

Email and the private feedback on Google Play go only to us. Posts in the group are visible to other members, so send anything personal by email.
